St.Joe's Professor Suspended for Anti-Reparations Tweet

TheHawk.com reported on Tuesday (February 23) that “The university has launched an external investigation into a St. Joe’s math professor and placed him on indefinite paid leave.

The investigation involves Greg Manco, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of mathematics and volunteer assistant coach for the St. Joe’s baseball team.”

According to his SJU Athletics profile, Manco has been with the university since 2005. “

Professor Manco’s Response To The Charges Against Him

Twitter friends,

It appears that cancel culture is now knocking on my door. In advance of a school newspaper article, I wanted to share my thoughts here in a way that they would be unfiltered.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has taken up Manco’s cause. FIRE sent a letter to St. Joe’s President, Mark C. Reed, demanding that university cease its investigation of Manco. According to FIRE’s letter, Manco’s suspension violatates the university’s promises of “free expression and academic freedom …  As evidenced by students submitting complaints, some who saw Manco’s tweets found them offensive. However, whether speech is protected is “a legal, not moral, analysis,”  and Manco’s tweets do not fall into an unprotected category of speech, as there is no exemption for speech on the basis that others find it disagreeable, offensive, or outrageous.

Want to Try Luge? From Lower Merion, It Starts With a Drive to Lake Placid

I was watching the Luge on NBC over the weekend. I thought it was boring, especially when juxtaposed against the more dramatic events, like curling.  The color commentator kept explaining how each “slider” was doing something slightly better or worse than the others, but to my untrained eye, they all looked the same: feet first, […]

January 16-18: The Philly Pen Show — A Delightfully Analog Experience

f you’re looking for a break from screens, alerts, and endless scrolling, the Philly Pen Show might be the cure—at least temporarily. It’s an unapologetically analog event: pens, paper, ink, and the people who still care deeply about them. Whether you’re a serious collector, someone who misses the feel of writing by hand, or just […]
